Alligator Farm

Today we headed to St Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park (bit of a mouthful) so it's really just a bunch of photos.

Boat-tailed Grackle

There were literally 100s of alligators in the place, all lolling over one another much like the marine iguanas in the Galapagos.

This one is definitely keeping an eye on me.

This strange looking reptile is a Gharial, which is an Indian Crocodile and amongst the most long living species of all crocs.

As usual I was more interested in the birds, particularly this Southern Cassowary as we're hoping to see them in the wild in Australia later this year.  This one was definitely caged though and far too close for my lens.

This amazing creature is a Knobbed Hornbill but not endemic - it comes from the Indonesian islands area.

Grey Crowned Crane which we've seen many times in Africa but it's always a welcome sight.

I couldn't get far enough back from this Hyacinth Macaw to get all its tail in shot.

A Lemur (Ring-tailed I suspect but as I can't see its tail, I can't be sure)

A lovely sloth, sadly fast asleep (sorry about the close-wired fence).

I think I can definitely say it's a 3 toed one.

The park had an area called The Rookery where egrets and spoonbills were nesting and we spent a long time there watching the birds displaying their mating plumage, flying around carrying nesting material, interacting with one another and generally standing around looking fabulous.

Starting with Great Egrets

Then Roseate Spoonbills (some definitely rosier than others; the colouring being more intensified during the breeding season).  I had especially wanted to see these birds, preferably in the wild but I'll accept these.

I had to show a close up to show the fabulous feathers and also the fairly ugly head.

Another cropped in shot as it looks just like a ballerina dressed in a pink tutu.
